چکیده

M any people have high blood cholesterol that may lead to coronary heart disease (CHD). A multifaceted approach consisting of diet, exercise, and pharmacological management is recommended to lower the risk of CHD.1 Elevated low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) has been established as a major cause of CHD.1 The group of cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins (3-hydroxy3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A [HMG-CoA] reductase inhibitors) are widely and successfully used in the management of atherosclerotic disease processes that include CHD, myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.2 Statins inhibit the formation of HMG-CoA reductase, which is essential in forming mevalonate, a precursor to cholesterol and other compounds. Lowering LDL-C is the goal of statin therapy, and multiple studies indicate that lowering LDL-C decreases the risk for CHD in people without a history of CHD and decreases the risk for cardiovascular events in people with a history of CHD.1

Expanding the therapeutic potential of statins by means of nanotechnology enabled drug delivery systems.

Statins are effective lipid lowering agents traditionally used for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Statins also exert a range of pleiotropic effects that make them attractive candidates for use in a wide range of disorders, in particular inflammatory and immune mediated conditions. However, the exploitation of such pleiotropic effects has been greatly hindered by...

Safety of statins when response is carefully monitored: a study of 336 heart recipients.

BACKGROUND Statins are used as first-line drugs against hypercholesterolemia after heart transplantation. Randomized clinical trials have shown that they reduce cholesterol levels, and the incidence of rejection and coronary vasculopathy. Adverse effects have been related to the use of certain statins, high statin dosages, comorbidities, and coadministration with cyclosporine. However, estimati...

Preventive effects of ipratropium and salbutamol against insulin induced tracheal smooth muscle contraction in guinea pig model

Inhalational insulin was withdrawn from the market due to its potential to produce airway hyper-reactivity and bronchoconstriction. So the present study was designed to explore the acute effects of insulin on airway reactivity of guinea pigs and protective effects of salbutamol and ipratropium against insulin induced airway hyper-responsiveness on isolated tracheal smooth muscle of guinea pig. ...

The safety of statins in clinical practice.

Statins are effective cholesterol-lowering drugs that reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease events (heart attacks, strokes, and the need for arterial revascularisation). Adverse effects from some statins on muscle, such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, are rare at standard doses, and on the liver, in increasing levels of transaminases, are unusual. Myopathy--muscle pain or weakness with bloo...
